Youth Group Acitivites

Language Arts 101- This workshop will be offered to innercity youth, teaching them various languages such as Spanish, Amharic, German and others. The goal of this workshop is to broaden one's vocabulary & teach kids how to interact with people from different cultures. In today's technology driven society, being bi-lingual will help the kids of today in the future socially, politically and economically.

"Literacy through Self Expression Project" -This project is aimed at helping and encouraging youth to read to express themselves through writing and music. Percy Bates and the DLG social media groups on Facebook is planning the 2016  PoetryJazzCafe tour. The purpose of this tour is to bring the power, beauty and elegance of poetry, spoken word and Jazz to a new audience & to spread the goal and focus of the "Literacy through Self Expression Project". Due to technology, youth no longer read books in the traditional way. We want to encourage kids to write what they feel and keep journals that they utilize for 15 minutes everyday to expand their vocabulary and express themselves. Mentoring Adolescence Program Project(M.A.P.P)-This program is intended to bring in successful businessmen & women from different professions to speak to teens about their jobs. The purpose of this is to open the minds of teens to the various careers that they could pursue in life with hard work & determination.

Break The Chains Group- This group is to educate at risk youth to deter them from drugs, gangs & crime through intervention, counseling and mentoring projects. We want these at risk youth to visit jails & prisons to see & listen to those incarcerated to see the consequences of not living a law-abiding lifestyle.

Chess 4 Life- Chess 4 life will teach innercity teens how to play the game of chess and show them the similarities between chess and life. Just like one playing chess has to think all of his or her moves out in order to try to win the game, the same planning and thinking situations through exist in life for one to be successful.

Book Club- This Book Club is to get kids reading various literary works each month and talking about the book in a group forum environment each month. Today's teens spend most of their free time playing video games, texting, internet surfing, but not reading things of substance.

Learning Tree- We'd like to offer mentoring and tutoring in Math, Social Studies, English, and Literary Arts. The more we teach these kids, the further they can go in life and building a successful life.

Youth Business Leadership- This workshop is to teach kids about how to start and run a business. This class will show teens what it takes to own a business and the responsibilities one must have to be successful. We want to teach kids about the stock market, investment and banking.

As we go further along in our mission we plan on offering a variety of classes, workshops and groups to help teens became better citizens to themselves, which will be a gift to our community and society.

Tennis Program- We are working to re-establish "Marshall Tennis Courts" at the Flint Northwestern High School. Mr. Ben Marshall, started the tennis program at Flint Northwestern and oversaw both the boys & girls tennis team as Head Coach until he retired from school teaching in the year 2000. Mr. Marshall learned the game for recreational while a student at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. The game he learned for fun, turned into a game that he taught to inter city kids that still thank him for it to this day.
